Takeshi Murakami, known as the "Andy Warhol of Japan," creates his quirky, one-of-a-kind figures and artwork by drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese painting. Murakami blurs the barriers between high art and low culture, East and West, the past and present by using both conventional media, like as painting and sculpture, as well as commercial media, including fashion and animation.

To be honest, I didn't like flowers at first, but as I drew them more frequently, my feelings changed: their smell, their shape - it all made me feel almost physically sick, while also making me think they were "cute." Each appeared to have its own emotion, its own personality. My dominant sensation was one of unease, which I enjoyed. And now that I draw flowers on a regular basis, that sensation has returned vividly. They're just as beautiful as they are disturbing to me. At the same time, they have this strength about them; it's the same image of strength I see when drawing the human face. So I decided that if the opportunity arose, I would like to create a work in which I would represent them as if in a "crown scene," in the manner of those film scenes of moving crowds. I really wanted to convey a sense of unease, of the threatening nature of an approaching crowd.
