Takashi Murakami

The Andy Warhol of Japan

Takeshi Murakami, known as the "Andy Warhol of Japan," creates his quirky, one-of-a-kind figures and artwork by drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese painting. Murakami blurs the barriers between high art and low culture, East and West, the past and present by using both conventional media, like as painting and sculpture, as well as commercial media, including fashion and animation.

Blue Flowers & Skulls

Unframed

The pieces in the show are bright and cheery, juxtaposing opposing imagery — flowers, which indicate life and growth, and skulls, which can relate to death and decay — to speak to the artist's inner struggle with postwar Japanese culture and his personal accomplishment as an artist. "What is the definition of art?" It is an ongoing concern for those of us who were born in Asia. The reason for this is that what we now call art is the road taken by Western art history, but we in the East have our own history," Murakami explained. "We must learn to resolve the clash of these two cultures if we are to exist as artists." My own particular position is based on my ability to arrange the unique blooms of Asia, as well as the ever-bizarre blossoms that have sprouted amid the craziness of postwar Japan's defeated culture, into work that will live inside the constraints of Western art history."
