Takashi Murakami

The Andy Warhol of Japan

Takeshi Murakami, known as the "Andy Warhol of Japan," creates his quirky, one-of-a-kind figures and artwork by drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese painting. Murakami blurs the barriers between high art and low culture, East and West, the past and present by using both conventional media, like as painting and sculpture, as well as commercial media, including fashion and animation.

Panda Cubs Panda

White Frame Included

Takashi Murakami's magnificent and distinctively Japanese style has cemented his place in the international art landscape. The Japanese artist is most recognized for his vibrant, anime inspired pop art and fashion collaborations with labels like Louis Vuitton, including pandas, skulls, and flowers as characteristic icons. He's been dubbed "The Japanese Andy Warhol" for his trippy and bright graphics."

The pandas are "spirit residents of the other-dimensional colorful universe," according to Murakami, who "travel through time and space." It's a story imbued with sweetness, or kawaii in Japanese, as is most of Murakami's work; indeed, Panda Giant may be the most kawaii of the artist's whole body of work. But there's more to his parodies of his native country's fixation with cuteness than meets the eye — it's all part of a cultural examination of Japan.
