ALEC MONOPOLY

Mr. Monopoly

The Los Angeles-based graffiti artist Alec Monopoly is noted for his subversive appropriation of iconic pop figures and distinctive representation of the Monopoly board game mascot image. The artist satirically merges Pop Art with cultural critique and social commentary by merging components of the game's characters with financially catastrophic newspaper clippings. Monopoly exposes flaws with bureaucratic hierarchies and the American collective consciousness by using the urban surroundings of New York City, Los Angeles, and London as his canvas.

Biography

Alec Monopoly challenges his audience to both critique and buy into ideals of stardom, money, and fame in his murals, cavanses, and prints. Rich Uncle Pennybags, the suited mascot of the board game that inspired the artist's moniker, appears frequently in Monopoly. Throughout the artist's witty work, the mustachioed character, who frequently carries a money bag or displays other apparent indicators of wealth, becomes a stand-in for capitalist greed. Monopoly has also integrated pop culture icons and characters into his street art style, such as Bob Dylan, Patrick Bateman, Scrooge McDuck, and Richie Rich. He's had shows in Miami, Moscow, and other cities.

  • Beginnings

Alec Monopoly credits his artistic beginnings to studying from his artist mother, eventually forsaking standard academically driven art programs to seek a unique methodology.

  • Early Works

Monopoly, unlike other street painters, avoids vandalism by painting on abandoned buildings and warehouses rather than government or commercial sites. His use of the board game character Mr. Monopoly as his mascot was inspired by stockbroker Bernie Madoff and is meant to be a critique of the billion-dollar bailouts and deregulation connected with major banks.

  • Most Famous Works

Alec Monopoly is a world-renowned graffiti artist whose vivid, trademark work offers a witty message about luxury and excess. His characters include Uncle Pennybags, Richie Rich, and Uncle Scrooge. Monopoly's art is now a popular collector's item among famous actors and musicians, and he uses it to start a debate about pop culture and capitalism in modern society.

  • Style & Technique

The artist has worked in the metropolitan environments of New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Europe, and Asia, subversively depicting numerous prominent pop culture icons with diverse materials (including stencils, spray paint, epoxies, varnishes, and newspapers).

  • Success

The Wall Street Journal, London Times, New York Post, Rolling Stone, Playboy Magazine, Billboard Magazine, Vibe, The Huffington Post, Complex Magazine, Juxtapoz, and The Dirt Floor, among others, have covered Alec and his work. Alec Monopoly was commissioned by Paramount Pictures to design the logo for their production firm, INSURGE.

He has garnered international acclaim and has worked on high-profile projects for The W Hotel, Philipp Plein, TAG Heuer, Vitamin Water, Avicii, and CoverGirl.
