Matt Gondek

21st century American deconstructionist

Matt Gondek a.k.a. GONDEKDRAWS is a L.A. based painter, muralist, and graphic illustrator. His works are usually deconstructions of popular icons, e.g. Mickey Mouse and Homer Simpson. Never formally trained, Gondek employs clean lines and bright colors in his art to keep in line with the comic-book and cartoon style his inspirations originate from.

Mouse Deconstructed Original - Gondek

White Frame Included

Matt realized he was an artist instinctively at a young age, making his first work of art - a comic book while still in elementary school. He continues to paint comic book characters, although they are now more typically seen on the exterior of buildings or hanging in a contemporary art gallery. His first genuine creative work was as a digital illustrator, making images for licensed music clothing. His ability gave him freedom, which led to his launching his own apparel and art business on his 30th birthday. Sadly, he rapidly discovered that operating a boutique was not for him.

Matt closed his business and struggle for three months with indecision and a lack of direction. He picked up a paintbrush on a whim, inspired by a large stack of Micky Mouse sketches he had created for a freelance project. Mickey's head was exploding in one sketch. When he finished his first painting, he started another, and then another. At the time, he had evolved his unique painting style, and he is still creating the deconstructed cartoon figures and fragmented cultural icons of our childhood.

Though the deconstruction is morbid in principle, Gondek's hilarious implementation relies on cheerful whimsy instead. His unique style is defined by his use of bold lines, vibrant color, and graphic nature. 2019's characters, such Deconstructed Pig, Deconstructed Sponge, and Deconstructed Kakrotto, are totally recognizable, with one half revealing the original form and the other blasted apart - the core of his portrayal of “deconstruction."
