Takeshi Murakami, known as the "Andy Warhol of Japan," creates his quirky, one-of-a-kind figures and artwork by drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese painting. Murakami blurs the barriers between high art and low culture, East and West, the past and present by using both conventional media, like as painting and sculpture, as well as commercial media, including fashion and animation.

Murakami's iconic image, Mr DOB, a hybrid cartoon figure based in part on a stylized portrait of the artist himself, is featured in this lithograph. DOB stands for "why," and it reflects Murakami's critical view about consumer society's emptiness. The flatness of the images alludes to traditional Japanese painting while also connecting his work to the two-dimensional nature of many modern media imagery and computer graphics. Murakami is able to reflect on a range of topics, such as the effects of technology and globalization on national and individual identity, by combining Western techniques, contemporary media, and the otaku subculture (which arose from the introduction of American comics).
