Takeshi Murakami, known as the "Andy Warhol of Japan," creates his quirky, one-of-a-kind figures and artwork by drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese painting. Murakami blurs the barriers between high art and low culture, East and West, the past and present by using both conventional media, like as painting and sculpture, as well as commercial media, including fashion and animation.

Murakami focuses on two of his most recognizable motifs in Skulls & Flowers: smiling flowers and skulls, both of which initially appeared in the 1990s. He paints an overlapping field of joyful faces capped with a halo of floral petals against an all-over field of anime-inspired skulls. Several dialectically interwoven couples give rise to variable constellations: abstraction and embodiment, figure and pattern, rhythm and substance, form and matter, stylisation and naturalism. It is compositionally ahierarchical because it lacks a single set focal point. With a strong sense of rhythm, pattern upon pattern, and refined elegance, a limitless expansion of visual field appears to linger on the threshold of our sight.
